Everyone Loves A SGR…?
From Ken Shamrock to Kurt Angle… Dean Malenko to Dean Ambrose… Triple H to Tori… Everyone loves a Special Guest Referee (from now onwards in this article known as SGR – to save me writing special guest referee over and over and over and over and over again…)
Ok so maybe it can be quite predictable… And I’m not say that we should have a SGR dedicated PPV event… Although…?… Maybe??? Just glue it on to the side of Extreme Rules, I’m sure that’d be fine.
Anyway! We can assume that such a rare occasion is likely to create controversy somewhere in the match when it comes to the SGR. However SummerSlam’s match between Kevin Owens and AJ Styles looks as though it may have to be the fairest SGR match to date! With Shane McMahon at the helm of the match, and the SmackDown Live brand, he must surely be as fair as possible…?
Unless a match between Shane and Kevin Owens is in the books, in which this is perfect for Shane to really upset an already volcanic Canadian. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Y2J make an appearance either… Although I am not sure how I’d feel about continuing the Kevin Owens/Chris Jericho feud… I wouldn’t want it to drag on like a Dean Ambrose/Miz situation…
ANYWAY – The main reason for writing this article: Why Shane? Or more accurately: Why not Zoidberg? Sorry… I mean, why not another SuperStar? When watching the backstage confrontation on SmackDown Live, I became rather excited as Daniel Bryan suggested the idea of the SGR… and I wondered whether this could be a chance for his own return to the ring!
What better way to create more buzz than have Daniel Bryan as a Special Guest Referee!?!?
Don’t get me wrong, I am very much looking forward to the inevitable cheeky antics of Shane, but nothing would come close to the crowd’s reaction of seeing Daniel Bryan involved in a match, even as a SGR. I’m sure this would have had a brief mention when planning this match up, but the idea doesn’t have the same long term plan opportunities available due to obvious health concerns and Daniel’s retirement.
As a fantasy booking though… Not a bad little idea…
So who would you pick to be the SGR? Let us know in the comments, and maybe someone from WWE will pick up on it and then release the pigs that fly…
