Should Kenny Omega Win The IWGP Heavyweight Title at Dominion?

The rematch has been set. Kazuchika Okada will be facing Kenny Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Dominion on June 11th. The question is….should Kenny be walking out of Osaka with the belt?

Yes…and no. There are a multitude of reasons why Kenny Omega is a suitable champion, his ability between the ropes being at the forefront.

With New Japan seemingly looking at ‘breaking America’ as soon as possible having a top champion who is fluent in both English and Japanese certainly bridges the gap for a market predominately driven by elaborate story lines from the likes of WWE and IMPACT.

One of the issues surrounding this rematch from the January 4th Tokyo Dome show is the fact that it all feels too soon. Omega’s win in the G1 Climax tournament last year was undoubtably a shock for many fans and showed that New Japan was finally willing to push new talent to plug the chasm left behind by the departure of AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura and The Club. Omega’s subsequent match at Wrestle Kingdom against Okada was a genuine star making performance and showed that Kenny was more than capable of delivering as a main event level talent on the biggest stage that NJPW has to offer. After the bout Omega slipped away from the company and rumours began floating of a potential jump to WWE, his recent return cleared any doubts and showed that Kenny has some unfinished business in New Japan…namely the IWGP Heavyweight title, but even with the rumours and the nearly 6 month wait for this rematch it all feels too soon for Kenny to get the title.

Kazuchika Okada is arguably the greatest champion on the planet right now in any promotion. He has elevated himself and consequently the IWGP Title to where his status as the ace of New Japan can no longer be contested. We here are Turnbuckle feel that for Okada’s incredible run to end at Dominion would feel too soon and that he should drop the belt at next year’s Wrestle Kingdom against the eventual G1 winner….speaking of the G1 Climax…..

New Japan will be heading to the United States for a very special G1 presentation at the Long Beach Convention Center on July 1st/2nd. In terms of ways that New Japan could introduce their unique brand of professional wrestling wouldn’t the grandest come by unveiling a brand new champion who could cut a lengthy promo in front of the live crowd….? Kenny Omega would be the man for the job then.

So herein lies the conundrum, do you give Kenny the belt for your G1 Special in the United States and begin a new era presenting New Japan as a global entity? Or do you stay the course with a proven star such as Okada and give the fans in the Tokyo Dome a memorable title change on January 4th 2018? Like we said, we would go for the latter.

What do you think? Should Kenny win the belt? Let us know in the comments.
