What are the Sleeper matches for New Japan’s Dominion Card on June 11th?

New Japan will soon be heading in to their busiest time of the year. It all begins with the Best of the Super Juniors tournament that starts May 17th, followed by Dominion on June 11th and finally the G1 Climax tournament that will be taking place in July.

New Japan has now released the line up of key matches that will be taking place on the Dominion card and they are as follows:

  • Cody Rhodes vs. Michael Elgin

  • Roppongi Vice (Beretta & Rocky Romero) (c) vs. Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) (IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship)

  • Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Roa) vs. War Machine (Hanson & Ray Rowe) (c) (IWGP Tag Team Championship)
  • Hirooki Goto vs. Minoru Suzuki (c) (NEVER Openweight Championship Lumberjack Match)

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito (c) (IWGP Intercontinental Championship)

  • Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Kenny Omega (IWGP Heavyweight Championship)

A couple of bouts instantly stand out, the Tokyo Dome rematch between Okada/Omega will be headlining and heavily promoted as expected and the Intercontinental Championship bout between Naito and New Japan legend Tanahashi could see a title change with Naito rumoured to be in line for a G1 win and a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight title at next year’s Wrestle Kingdom.

For us here at Turnbuckle there are two bouts that could jump out of left field and turn some heads if given the time, those being Cody/Elgin and Suzuki/Goto.

  • Cody Vs Michael Elgin – Since debuting at Wrestle Kingdom earlier this year the ‘American Nightmare’ Cody has not quite yet hit the level he nor the fans have expected. His bout with Juice while solid did not stand out on a card filled with some match of the year contenders. We believe that this will all change against Michael Elgin who himself had a rough start in New Japan but is now one of the premier performers in the company having had some stand out performances against the likes of Kenny Omega and Tetsuya Naito. We’re hoping that this will be Cody’s true arrival in the land of NJPW.

  • Minoru Suzuki vs Hirooki Goto – This bout between two of New Japan’s hardest hitting performers will be for the NEVER Openweight Title. Being billed as a lumberjack match does not do much for the excitement factor but these two are likely to go in all guns blazing. The Strong Style of New Japan has recently garnered extra criticism following Katsuyori Shibata’s horrific head injuries and hopefully these will serve as a warning to ease up on the severe head strikes and attacks that are prevelant in the NEVER division.
